The Partridge and the Rabbit's Dispute

Panchatantra Story: The Cat's Judgement

The Partridge and the Rabbit's Dispute

The Cat’s Judgement

Once upon a time, there lived a partridge who had been living in a nest beneath a large peepul tree for many years. One day, while the partridge was away, a rabbit found her empty nest and made it his home. When the partridge returned, she was surprised and angry to find the rabbit living there. She demanded that the rabbit leave, but the rabbit refused, arguing that since the partridge had not been living there for many days, the nest was no longer hers.

As the partridge and the rabbit argued, many animals and birds gathered around to listen. Unable to decide whom the house belonged to, they suggested that the partridge and the rabbit take the dispute to a judge.

The partridge and the rabbit set out to find a judge, and after travelling far and wide, they finally reached the banks of the Ganges. There, they saw a tom-cat at a distance. However, they were scared to approach him because he was known to be wicked. But the tom-cat had heard their conversation and quickly closed his eyes, stood up on his hind legs, and started praying at the top of his voice.

The partridge and the rabbit were puzzled but decided that the cat would be a good judge for their dispute. When the tom-cat finished his prayers and opened his eyes, the partridge explained the entire argument to the cat. When she had finished speaking, the rabbit told his part of the story.

The cat sat quietly for a minute and then said, "I am very old and cannot hear or see properly. Can you both come a little closer and tell me the whole story again?"

The partridge and the rabbit, now trusting the tom-cat, moved closer to him. However, as soon as they moved forward, the cat hit them hard with his paws, killed them, and ate them up.

The moral of the story is that one should never trust a stranger, even though he may seem very friendly. The tom-cat appeared to be a holy cat, but he was actually wicked and had tricked the partridge and the rabbit.

This story teaches us an important lesson about the dangers of blindly trusting strangers. It is important to be cautious and careful when dealing with people we do not know, especially if they seem too good to be true. Just because someone appears to be friendly and trustworthy does not necessarily mean that they are.

In today's world, where people can easily hide behind online profiles and social media accounts, it is even more important to be vigilant and cautious. We should always be careful about who we trust and share personal information with, as we never know what someone's true intentions may be.

Moral, the story of the cat's judgment is a cautionary tale that reminds us to be cautious and vigilant when dealing with strangers. We should always be careful about who we trust and avoid making hasty decisions based on first impressions.
