The Honest Woodcutter and the Fairy

Once upon a time, there was a small village near a deep green forest. In that village lived a poor but very honest woodcutter. He did not own much land or money, but he had a kind heart and always spoke the truth. The villagers respected him because he never cheated anyone.


Every morning, the woodcutter woke up early, took his old iron axe, and walked into the forest. He cut trees, collected wood, and sold it in the market to earn money for his family. Near the forest flowed a clean and deep river. The sound of flowing water made the forest calm and peaceful.


One day, while cutting a big tree near the riverbank, something unfortunate happened. The woodcutter’s hand slipped, and his axe fell into the river. The water was deep and fast, and the axe quickly disappeared.

The woodcutter was shocked and very sad. That axe was the only tool he had. Without it, he could not work or earn money.

He sat down near the river and started crying.
“Oh no! I am a poor man,” he said sadly. “How will I feed my family now?”


Suddenly, the river water began to glow, and a beautiful fairy appeared. She had shining wings and wore a dress that sparkled like stars. Her voice was soft and kind.

“Why are you crying, dear woodcutter?” asked the fairy.

The woodcutter stood up respectfully and replied, “My axe fell into this river. I am poor and cannot buy a new one.”

The fairy smiled gently and said, “Do not worry. I will help you.”

She dived into the river and came back holding a golden axe that shone brightly in the sunlight.

“Is this your axe?” she asked.

The woodcutter looked at it carefully and said honestly,
“No, fairy. This is not my axe. Mine was simple and made of iron.”


The fairy nodded and went into the river again. This time, she returned with a silver axe.

“Is this your axe?” she asked again.

The woodcutter replied without hesitation,
“No, fairy. This is also not mine.”

The fairy smiled, pleased by his honesty. She went into the river for the third time and came back holding an old iron axe.

The woodcutter’s face lit up with joy.
“Yes! This is my axe,” he said happily.

The fairy was very impressed.

“You are truly an honest man,” she said. “Many people would lie for gold or silver, but you spoke the truth.”

As a reward for his honesty, the fairy gave him all three axes — the golden axe, the silver axe, and his iron axe.

The woodcutter was surprised and very thankful. He bowed and said,
“Thank you, fairy. I will always remain honest.”

He returned home happily. Soon, he sold the golden and silver axes and lived a comfortable life. He helped the poor and continued to be truthful. Everyone in the village learned an important lesson from him.
